Bouyon and dennery segment: the new Eastern Caribbean
Two small islands invented two genres within a generation of each other, and between them they define what the Eastern Caribbean sounds like now.
Two genres from two very small places
Dominica has a population of about 70,000. Saint Lucia has under 200,000. Between them they have produced two of the most consequential Caribbean genres of the last forty years, both of which have spread well beyond their islands of origin and neither of which is widely known outside the region.
That is worth pausing on. The Caribbean's musical output is routinely attributed to Jamaica and Trinidad, and those two islands have earned it. But the invention has never been confined to them, and the Eastern Caribbean's smaller islands have been generating new forms continuously.
Bouyon
Bouyon emerged in Dominica in the late 1980s, credited to the band Windward Caribbean Kulture โ WCK. It takes jing ping, the island's traditional accordion, boom-boom and shak-shak dance music, and drives it with cadence, soca and electronic production.
The name is the Kwรฉyรฒl word for a stew, which describes the method accurately. The result is fast, dense and percussive, with a rhythmic insistence quite unlike Trinidadian soca, and it became Dominica's dominant popular music within a few years.
It also spread. Bouyon has a substantial following across the Eastern Caribbean and in the diaspora, and sub-styles have developed โ including bouyon gwada in Guadeloupe, which closes the circle with the French islands that fed cadence into it in the first place.
Dennery segment
Dennery segment is younger, emerging in the 2010s from the fishing village of Dennery on Saint Lucia's east coast. It is sparser and faster than soca, built on a stripped-back, insistent rhythm with heavy use of local Kwรฉyรฒl vocals and often a deliberately raw production.
It spread across the Eastern Caribbean within a few years and became the sound most associated with Saint Lucian Carnival. Like bouyon before it, it grew out of a specific place rather than a studio scene, and its rise happened largely outside the regional music industry's attention.
The two genres are frequently mentioned together because they occupy the same space โ modern, fast, Eastern Caribbean, rhythm-first โ and artists move between them.
Why they matter
Bouyon and dennery segment demonstrate something about how Caribbean music actually works. Neither was created by an industry, a label or a marketing plan. Both came out of small communities working with the traditional music around them and whatever production technology was available, and both spread through fetes, sound systems and radio rather than through commercial promotion.
That is the same process that produced ska in Kingston and soca in Port of Spain. It has not stopped; it has simply moved to islands that receive less attention.
Both genres are also now feeding back into soca. Trinidadian and Barbadian producers have absorbed elements of each, and the boundaries between them are blurring in the way that Caribbean genre boundaries always have.
How to listen
Dominican and Saint Lucian stations are the primary sources, and the seasons are the time โ Saint Lucia's Carnival in July, Dominica's pre-Lenten Carnival in February or March and its World Creole Music Festival in late October.
Grenada and Saint Vincent stations carry both genres too, since the audience crosses borders freely and the artists tour the whole Eastern Caribbean circuit. Very little of this music is played outside the region, which makes streaming the local stations essentially the only way to follow it. The stations below carry it live.
