The public broadcaster of the US Virgin Islands, carrying news, cultural programming, educational content and music across Saint Thomas, Saint Croix and Saint John. As the territory's public service it does the work that commercial radio does not — coverage of the legislature, local documentary, and sustained attention to quelbe, the scratch-band music that the Virgin Islands designated its official music by legislation. Played on banjo, guitar, ukulele and a gourd scraped with a wire, with lyrics that carry satire and social commentary in the same tradition as calypso, quelbe survives partly because institutions like this one kept giving it airtime.
