Island FM - The Rhythm Of Cayman

A Grand Cayman station programming toward the Caribbean end of the local dial — reggae, soca and island music — as a counterweight to the international formats that a heavily expatriate population supports. Cayman's own musical traditions are string-and-percussion based: fiddle and guitar with rhythm improvised from a grater scraped with a fork and a washtub bass, played by kitchen bands assembled from whatever was to hand. Those forms survive largely through deliberate revival, and the national festival of the arts exists in part to sustain them.
