Dr. Dick’s Dub Shack

A dub and roots reggae stream, and a specialist one. Dub was invented in Kingston in the 1970s when engineers like King Tubby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry took existing recordings, stripped out the vocals and rebuilt the mix live at the desk, drenching fragments in reverb and delay. In doing so they invented the remix, treated the mixing desk as an instrument, and established the idea that a recording is raw material rather than a finished object — a notion that almost every form of electronic dance music since has been built on. Stations devoted to dub serve an audience that came to reggae through that door.
