Guyana's national radio service, operated by the state broadcaster and carrying news, current affairs, parliamentary coverage, agricultural and health programming alongside music. As the country's established public voice it reaches further than the commercial stations, which matters in a country where most of the territory is rainforest and the population is concentrated on a narrow coastal strip. Voice of Guyana programmes across the country's cultural spectrum — Afro-Guyanese masquerade and queh-queh traditions, Indo-Guyanese chutney and devotional music, soca and reggae — and carries the national occasions, above all Mashramani on Republic Day in late February.
