Thirty-two islands and a volcano

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a single mountainous main island trailing a chain of small ones — Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Union Island and others — down toward Grenada. Most of the population lives on Saint Vincent itself, in the shadow of La Soufrière, an active volcano that erupted explosively in the early 2020s and covered the north of the island in ash.

The Grenadines have their own character, with Bequia keeping a boatbuilding and whaling heritage and its own model-boat craft, and the smaller islands living largely from sailing and fishing.

Vincy Mas

Saint Vincent moved its Carnival off the pre-Lenten date in the 1970s, and Vincy Mas now runs from late June into early July. That timing gives it a clear run and draws visitors from across the region and the diaspora, and the season builds through soca monarch and calypso competitions to J'ouvert and the final Mardi Gras parade in Kingstown.

The music is mainstream soca with a strong Vincentian accent, and the stations carry the season heavily from spring onward. Older traditions persist alongside it — string band music, quadrille, and the big drum tradition shared with Carriacou and Grenada.

The radio landscape

For a population of around 100,000 the dial is surprisingly full. NBC Radio is the national broadcaster, and alongside it sit a range of commercial and community stations covering soca, reggae and dancehall, gospel, and a substantial amount of news and call-in talk.

Vincentian radio proved its worth during the volcanic crisis, when stations carried evacuation information and kept a displaced population connected. That role — practical, local, immediate — is much of what radio still does here.

Bequia and the Grenadines

The Grenadines run south from Saint Vincent in a chain of small islands with sharply different characters. Bequia is the largest and most distinctive, with a boatbuilding tradition, a surviving licence for limited traditional whaling under international rules, and a model-boat craft that is genuinely fine work rather than souvenir production.

Mustique is private and famously expensive; Canouan has been substantially developed; Union Island is the working hub of the southern chain. Sailing binds them together, and the Easterval and regatta seasons bring music and competition to islands that are otherwise very quiet.

Beyond Carnival: string band, quadrille and gospel

Outside the Vincy Mas season the island's older music comes forward. String band — guitar, banjo, cuatro, shak-shak — plays at Christmas and at community events, and quadrille survives with its own figures and dress. The Big Drum tradition links Saint Vincent to Carriacou and Grenada, part of a shared cultural belt that cuts across national borders.

Gospel is a substantial presence, and Sunday radio in Saint Vincent sounds nothing like Saturday. For a listener trying to understand the island rather than only its Carnival, that contrast is the thing worth hearing.

Listening from the diaspora

Vincentians abroad are concentrated in New York, Toronto and the United Kingdom, and the diaspora is large relative to the resident population. Vincy Mas draws many of them home, and for those who cannot travel, the stations streaming the season are the substitute.

Outside Carnival, the appeal is the same as everywhere in the region: the local news, the church services, the call-in programmes and the accent.
